Dune (1984) – “Arrakeen Sandworm” Original Conceptual Artwork

Original hand drawn and colored concept of the Sandworm featured in the 1984 David Lynch Classic Dune. In the year 10191, a spice called melange is the most valuable substance known in the universe, and its only source is the desert planet Arrakis. A royal decree awards Arrakis to Duke Leto Atreides and ousts his bitter enemies, the Harkonnens. However, when the Harkonnens violently seize back their fiefdom, it is up to Paul (Kyle MacLachlan), Leto’s son, to lead the Fremen, the natives of Arrakis, in a battle for control of the planet and its spice. Based on Frank Herbert’s epic novel.

The Sandworn, or “Shai-Hulud” as it is known to the natives is one of the main focal points in Frank Herbberts visionary classic which transferred over to Lynch’s on-screen adaptation. This original piece features an early concept of the creature and was created by artist Ron Miller, and is also accredited to Dr. Liet Kynes for production designer Anthony Masters. This concept is pen and ink and gouache on illustration board. This This this exceptionally rare original artwork measures 13″ x 24″ and is expertly framed and matted behind museum quality glass. This piece remains in excellent, production used condition.
