The Rocketeer: Cirrus X-3 Jet Pack Prop

An interior section from the Cirrus X-3 jet pack prop from the production of the film The Rocketeer. Stunt pilot “Cliff Secord” (played by Bill Campbell) uses a rocket powered jet pack in order to commit heroic deeds, and attracts the attention of the FBI as well as Nazi spies. Extensive stunt sequences were filmed for the films aerial scenes involving the Rocketeer and his jet pack aerobatics. This pack was worn by stunt performers during the filming of those sequences. Constructed from a combination of resin, fiberglass, and metal, this jetpack originally housed a hidden parachute system. The process of deploying the parachute during filming ended up damaging the upper part of the jet pack and, as a result, that portion is missing from this piece. Remnants of material used for the jet pack’s hidden parachute rig are still present.
