A production made poster from the cult classic An American Werewolf in London. This poster is in good condition for the age with only a couple of small tears at the top and a number of pin holes. It measures an impressive 28” x 68”. Versions of this poster can be seen a number of times in the film and also in the “Making of” book.
‘See You Next Wednesday’ is an “in-joke” by Producer/Director John Landis. John Landis took his own private joke to a whole new level when he found a way to insert the same fake movie into virtually everything he’s ever done. You can see references to the fake movie in Trading Places, Coming to America, The Blues Brothers, and Spies Like Us, among others.
The poster also comes with an LOA which describes the poster in detail and it’s interesting origin.
The LOA reads as follows:
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
‘See You Next Wednesday’ Piccadilly Porn Poster “
My name is Tim Lawrence and in September 1983 I was hired by Rick Baker to work on Thriller. The first week was just me and him and part of my job was to clean out, organize and stock the shop. This included pulling down all the posters including this one from outside one of the bathroom doors. I asked what to do with it and he asked if I wanted it and here it is today.
Long sheet panel for Piccadilly porn theatre. 28” x 68”. VG condition. Corner tack holes. Top corners (L/R) a little torn but all there. Some slight scuffs top right and lower right (see pix). Heavy quality paper. Rolled, not folded. Nice, big poster.
‘See You Next Wednesday’ is a John Landis ‘in-joke’ and he uses the phrase in some way in all his movies. It refers to an orbital phone call in the movie ‘2001’ that ends with the same phrase.
