The Fantastic Four (2005) – Doctor Doom Concept Test Arm

Conceptual test arm made early on in the production process of the Marvel superhero family film The Fantastic Four. A group of astronauts gain superpowers after a cosmic radiation exposure and must use them to oppose the plans of their enemy, Doctor Victor Von Doom.

This arm was created by the famous FX artist Steve Johnson and features a very early design of the character, who was initially to be played by actor Nicolas Cage. This arm was used in the design process for the character as well as to show the producers and director what type of visual effects techniques were available for the character.

This piece is primarily made of fiberglass with a metal under-structure. The arm section is made of silicone and the whole piece is attached to a custom made display base featuring the films logo. The arm features various clear and tinted green vacuformed plastic sections that allow you to see under the armor to where numerous small and intricate metal technical details are present, woven into the human style arm. There is a custom made buffed stainless steel plate that has been attached to the back of the chest section for the display, but when removed reveals a series of plastic tubing, pumps and fiberoptic cables. It is believed that the tubing, which runs through the chest and are attached to holes that lead underneath the clear vacuformed plates were used to pump smoke through to create a smoky effect under the plastic.

There is a large strand made of numerous small strands of fiber optic cables that when a light source is presented light up small pin sized lights throughout the arm creating a visually stunning effect of the electronic components illuminating under the arms skin. This piece, which is a stunning representation of the production process remains in good production made and used condition.
