Darth Maul’s signature double bladed lightsaber featured in the production of the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) is a young apprentice Jedi knight under the tutelage of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) ; Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who will later father Luke Skywalker and become known as Darth Vader, is just a 9-year-old boy. When the Trade Federation cuts off all routes to the planet Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are assigned to settle the matter.
This fighting, or “dueling” lightsaber was featured throughout the film, most noticeably during the third act of the film where Darth Maul, actor Ray Park fights Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, actors Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson during the battle of the Trade Federation and the planet Naboo. This piece features a resin cast hilt section with two endocaps made of turned aluminum. The hilt is painted a metallic silver with black rubber “O” ring sections and painted on red buttons. The main hilt of the saber features a long section of “All Thread” protruding from each end tat was used to attach each of the two 33.75″ aluminum rods (secured with allen screws), or blades, expertly coated in fluorescent orange to represent its distinctive blades. The hilt measures 28.5″ long (with protruding “all thread”) and a full 88.5″ long with both blades installed. This piece shows signs of wear such as scuffs and marks inn the paint form use on set but remains in excellent, production used condition.
