Production-made large animatronic alien head from the 2011 prequel film The Thing. After Norwegian researchers discover an alien ship buried in the ice, paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. She finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago but, in fact, is about to awake. Freed from its icy prison, the insidious life-form goes on the attack. Paranoia spreads like wildfire among the crew as they fight to survive against a creature that assumes the shapes of its victims.
This head is from the creature that is initially cut out of the Antarctic ice in an ice block. After escaping from the ice block the creature soon killed Henrik Larsen, actor Jo Adrian Haavind, and was burned shortly after. The head is actually a mask and is made of foam rubber over an internal metal frame. It is sculpted to look like a savage alien head with many teeth and a shell over the head. Some of the foam and paint is cracking due to age. The large upper fangs, entire jaw, and lower jaw mandible are hinged and could be moved by means of an internal cable and servo system. Inside is a fiberglass face shell where the performer’s head would go and there is a zipper around the neck opening which would have attached the head to the larger alien body. There is a series of cables and electrical wires running out of the back of the head that would have been used to power and control the various internal mechanisms.
