Complete spacesuit used in the production of the 2019 Brad Pitt space epic Ad Astra. Thirty years ago, Clifford McBride led a voyage into deep space, but the ship and crew were never heard from again. Now his son — a fearless astronaut — must embark on a daring mission to Neptune to uncover the truth about his missing father and a mysterious power surge that threatens the stability of the universe.
This suit was featured in the lunar rover chase sequence that took place while Major Roy McBride, actor Brad Pitt and Colonel Pruit, actor Donald Sutherland are in pursuit by scavenger pirates while on their way to the SpaceComm base. Although unknown specifically which actor used this suit, it matches the exact design as seen during this sequence, and was also used for pickup shots after initial filming was finished. This suit is comprised of over several parts, which include the base costume, made of a heavy weight white canvas, nylon and cotton material. The main suit features a zipper that travels from the back of the crotch to the base of the neck area, and then is covered in Velcro. The suit features various stitching details as well as snap closures on the legs. The front of the spacesuit features two metal port holes where the suit would be connected to the backpack unit, as well as a small metal silver and orange clip in the center of the suit. The suit features Velcro on the shoulders where patches were present during filming, and custom made resin connectors around the neck area and the wrists.
The suit includes a set of gloves that connect to the suit with the same resin connectors, and features custom made rubber fingertips. The boots feature a large custom made dense urethane sole that are attached to a white nylon boot section with an ankle covering held together via Velcro on the back. The spacesuit features a large backpack unit, which is made of the same heavy weight white canvas material as the suit, and is wrapped around a rectangular under structure. The backpack unit features an embroidered American Flag patch on the back along with silver tape accents and a white 5 point harness that attaches to the front of the suit via silver metal push connectors. Once the backpack is in place on the suit there are two tubes covered in white nylon that attach from the side of the backpack to the front connector tubes on the suit.
To finish the suit off there is a white spacesuit helmet comprised of fiberglass and plastic. This piece is round in shape and features the same type of resin connector around the base that would connect it to the suit. The suit has two dials on the sides that control the main visor and allows it to be raised or lowered. The visor, or “Sun Shield” which would allow the astronauts eyes to be shielded form the sun’s rays is made of acrylic and is tinted a very dark metallic gold. This entire suit was custom made by the production for the actors so there is no size indicated. There is a set of black tubes inside the suit where air would be pumped in to keep the actors climate from getting too hot while filming. On each side of the helmet are two silver metal details with the words “Orbital Outfitters” inscribed on them, jokingly simulating an “Urban Outfitters” logo and comparing the suits as everyday wear for the people on Luna. This entire ensemble remains in excellent, production made and used condition.
